Derwent Lower School can now boast a new purpose built building opened in January 1998.
It is situated on the A6001, the main road linking the Village of Henlow to R.A.F. Henlow. It is surrounded by fields and has beautifully landscaped grounds.It has two pedestrian entrances and one vehicular access.

The school comprises of six classrooms, one 4-plus class area, hall, kitchens, staff room, medical room, library, administration area, cloak areas and storage room.
In September 2005 the Portacabin unit was converted and upgraded by John Lewis into the "Den". Children are able to practice and develop their fine and gross motor skills and their creativity skills.Activities experienced in the Den include wobble boards, musical instruments, construction kits, science experiments and art and craft. These activities reinforce the learning opportunities in the classroom.
The school has disabled access and toilet facilities. The outside area comprises of a courtyard in the middle, 4+enclosed play area, 2 playgrounds and playing fields.
